Most founders incorporate first and build later. We did it backwards — Britwise School Ltd was incorporated on 1 June 2026 (Companies House 17253094, ICO ZC174279) after the product had been live with real learners for years. This page is our public commitment: what we've shipped, what we're shipping next, and where we're heading.

Four years of building before we formed the company
Most founders incorporate first and build later. We did it backwards on purpose — the legal entity is a wrapper around a working product, not a wrapper around a deck.
2022
Idea + research
Began as a notebook of frustrations with IELTS prep — overpriced human tutors, generic apps, no British voices. Brainstormed names, sketched a product. No company yet.
2023
First prototype
Closed-source GPT-3.5 chat tutor on a personal domain. Ran with 30 unpaid learners across Hanoi. Clearest finding: speaking practice matters more than grammar drills.
2024
Closed beta · 600 learners
Rewrote on Expo / FastAPI / MongoDB. Daily Pack engine, IELTS Part 1/2/3 grading, Cue Card library. ICO conversations begin.
2025
Multi-tenant + B2B/B2G architecture
Schools (B2S), corporates (B2B) and councils (B2G) added as first-class tenants. SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, KCSiE-aligned safeguarding workflow.

Caseworker console with KCSiE-aligned keyword screening + 1-working-day manual DSL routing. Tenant-isolated B2C / B2B / B2G data plane.
DBS AES-256-GCM encryption at rest
All new tutor DBS documents encrypted application-layer with rotated keys. Backfill script available to superadmins for legacy records.
SAML 2.0 SSO + SCIM 2.0
Owner-gated upload, role allowlist, postMessage origin-scoped. SCIM provisioning writes the same org_members collection RBAC reads from.
TRACTION
Honest current state, audited by us monthly
We publish what we measure, not what we wish. Numbers below are as of 18 June 2026 and update on the first Monday of every month.
Active learners
600+ closed-beta learners migrated from 2024–2025. Public open since 1 June 2026. Monthly cohort tracking live in /superadmin/credits.
Pilots running
1 council pilot (London Borough of Merton — caseworker console for ESOL casework). 1 international-schools pilot in conversation. Public references published only after written consent.
Bands graded to date
~5,400 IELTS speaking band assessments across closed beta using Cambridge 4-criteria rubric. Independent examiner re-grading study (n≥100) launching Q3 2026.
Verified band-lift
Claimed +1.0 band over 12 weeks (on /sales/schools) is tagged "Target — projected" until the 100-sample efficacy study lands. We do not promote it as verified yet.
PROCUREMENT-READY
The standards-ladder we're climbing — in order
Each step is a prerequisite for the next major buyer segment. We move up the ladder before we sell into the segment, not after.

Self-assessment in progress. Patch cadence, endpoint controls, MFA on all admin paths already at standard.

External assessor selected. Prerequisite for any DfE / NHS Digital procurement. Targeted before serious B2G outreach.

WCAG 2.2 AA audit
External a11y audit. We currently say "working toward" — this is when we earn the right to drop the caveat.
ISO 27001
ISMS — required by the DfE Apps for Schools framework. Targeted 2027 — no earlier date until we commit a budget.
SOC 2 Type I → Type II
For US / Canadian enterprise sales. Type I first (point-in-time), Type II after 6 months of operating evidence. Gated on first US enterprise lead.
G-Cloud listing
Crown Commercial Service framework. Application opens periodically. Until Crown Commercial confirms in writing we will never claim "G-Cloud listed."
NON-DILUTIVE FIRST
How we're funding the next 18 months
We have not raised institutional capital. The plan is non-dilutive first (grants + tax credits), then a strategic seed only if the efficacy study lands well.
SEIS-eligible structure
Britwise School Ltd is structured as SEIS-qualifying from incorporation. Available to UK angel investors for the first three years. HMRC advance assurance is the next paperwork step.

Innovate UK / KTP application
Knowledge Transfer Partnership with a UK university for the efficacy study. In draft. Outcome announced either way.

R&D tax credits (SME scheme)
First full UK tax year ends March 2027. First R&D claim then. Meaningful but not yet quoted publicly.

Application drafted using the Voice Lab Migration Readiness Scorecard as evidence.
Strategic seed (post-efficacy-study)
Optional. Only if the published n≥100 efficacy study moves the band-lift claim from "Target" to "Verified". No deck, no pitch — the data does the talking.

GPT-4o vs Groq Llama-3.3-70b head-to-head on real IELTS speaking samples. Once published, the +1.0 band claim upgrades from "Target" to "Verified".

Replaces today's manual KCSiE keyword screening with an ML-backed classifier + 4-hour DSL SLA. Ships only after Designated Safeguarding Lead sign-off.

Stripe Connect tutor payouts
Marketplace tutors today are paid manually. Stripe Connect onboarding + 1099 / T5 / UK self-assessment statements automate this — required before marketplace scales beyond the initial 30 verified tutors.

The four-sector platform
B2C learners, B2B HR, B2S schools, B2G councils — one rubric, one efficacy story, one infra. Each sector with its own dashboard but pulling the same underlying skill graph.
Marketplace at scale
Verified British tutors take live cohort calls inside the app. DBS encrypted, payouts via Stripe Connect, ratings audited. Today: marketplace MVP. Vision: 500+ active tutors.
Examiner-audited efficacy
Quarterly external audits by ex-Cambridge / IDP examiners. Published cohort outcomes on /efficacy with raw data download. Independent verification, not self-reported.
International corridor expansion
After Vietnam: India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, the Philippines. Same product, locale-aware payments + accent-aware speech, no rewrites.
On-device speech
Whisper + small-model grading running locally on mid-range Android. Removes the data-leaves-the-device objection from school IT teams.
DfE / Department for Education framework
Long-term goal. Requires Cyber Essentials Plus + ISO 27001 + a published efficacy study + 12 months of council references. Targeted 2028.
